CCA-EDUCAUSE Australasia presentation on Summon

Many of the presentations from the recent CCA-EDUCAUSE Australasia Sydney conference are now on the Conference program website.

We gave a presentation on the usability studies conducted during 2010 and 2011 of the Serials Solutions Web scale discovery product, Summon. One key finding was that although students found the product easy to use, their skills at sifting through the results screens were not so good.

There is no full paper of the Summon presentation, however an article will be published this month's New Library World. More of that soon.

CCA-EDUCAUSE Australasia conference is on again in Sydney this year: 3-6 April 2011 at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour. CCA-EDUCAUSE conference is organised by CAUDIT, CAUL and ACODE and the focus is on information technology in higher education.

EDUCAUSE iPhone, iTunes Workshop

It was a good EDUCAUSE workshop yesterday on From Creation to Delivery - iLife, iPhone, iTunes U, I'm done.

The Apple guys gave a quick overview of podcasting, and the iPhone and iTunes. Podcast Producer is useful to manage workflows. Touched in iTunes U also. Since I posted last year about iTunesU in Australian unis there's a lot of good stuff happening out there with iTunesU. In Australia the leaders seem to be Griffith and Swinburne.

A concurrent session I didn't get to, but which sounded great, delivered a timely reminder on what footprints we are leaving behind when we waltz around the Net, especially on social networking sites: Walking on clouds: managing your digital footprints

EDUCAUSE Perth 2009

It's been late coming, but the EDUCAUSE program is finally out and Early Bird registration closes on March 18, 2009. There's an interesting program with a good mix of Web 2.0 Library and I.T.

I'll be following the trail to sessions on MLearning, training staff in Web 2.0, Moodle, ELearning.

The Horizon Report 2008

This time last year when we started this whole Learning 2.0 Training program with staff at ECU Library, one of the first landmark reports we read was the Horizon Report of 2007. Now the 2008 Horizon Report has been released.

The yearly Horizon Report is one of the major reports outlining technology trends in higher education. The report is put together by the New Media Consortium and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative . Each year the report seeks to define a research agenda by selecting six practices and technologies for particular attention. The 2008 Horizon Report highlights the six areas of:

grassroots video, collaboration webs, mobile broadband, data mashups, collective intelligence, and social operating systems.

Video on Flickr

Flickr is moving into providing video content. Is it too little too late? YouTube already have the mass market here in partnership with Google. But will Flickr aim for the high quality end of the market?

Technology Review in Yahoo's photo-sharing site, Flickr, expands into video with new service, gives a potted history of the last few years of online video and Flickr's new venture.

Only Flickr's ''pro'' members will be allowed to upload video clips, but anyone will be able to watch them. So this should weed out the dross that appears in YouTube More about video on Flickr here.

This move makes sense as the influential Horizon Report 2008 lists grassroots video as being on the first adoption horizon of new media technolgies in the short term.
