Take This Waltz
I was lucky enough to see a preview of the new film, Take This Waltz which opens in Australian cinemas on June 14th. The film was written and directed by Canadian Sarah Polley and stars Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen and Luke Kirby. If you don't see any film in the next few months then see this. It's simply wonderful. It's funny, poetic, romantic, yet quite a complex film that looks at a relationship that seems happy on the exterior, but something is amiss.
I hate the way this film is described on the IMDB: "A happily married woman falls for the artist who lives across the street". This makes the film sound so trite and ordinary, which is certainly isn't. Michelle Williams is wonderful in this. You just can't take your eyes off her.
The title comes from the Leonard Cohen song of the same name and the words of one line of the song are fitting in describing the film's story: "Take this waltz with the clamp on its jaws".
Take This Waltz is filmed on location in Toronto in the summer. It's a city you don't see very often in films. I lived there for a while, so it took me back to the beautiful old neighbourhoods that look like parts of New York.
